The push to digitize secondary education across Jharkhand has brought expensive interactive smartboards to dozens of state-run schools in Ranchi district. On paper, this transition represents a giant leap toward modernizing classrooms that have long relied on chalk and talk. Yet, visiting these institutions reveals a stark disconnect between high-tech policy directives and the daily practicalities of school administration.

Power Fluctuations and Hardware Dormancy

In many suburban schools, the expensive digital displays spend more time gathering dust than displaying lessons, primarily due to erratic electricity supply. Without robust backup generator systems, a sudden power cut midway through the morning session abruptly halts the curriculum. Teachers are often forced to revert to traditional textbooks, rendering the state-of-the-art infrastructure temporarily useless.

The Critical Need for Teacher Training

Acquiring hardware is relatively simple, but training educators to seamlessly integrate interactive software into their daily lesson plans requires sustained effort. Many senior teachers express a lack of confidence in troubleshooting basic software glitches, leading to anxiety during live classroom hours. To make this digital investment meaningful, the education department must prioritize continuous on-site technical support over one-off training seminars.
